AutoCAD is commonly used to create and edit 2D and 3D CAD drawings, and those files can form part of a BIM workflow. However, AutoCAD itself is generally not treated as a full BIM authoring platform in the same way as tools designed around object-based building models. Plumbing teams may still receive architectural, structural, or MEP information in DWG format and use those drawings as references while developing the BIM model.

These terms describe ways BIM information can be connected to other parts of the project beyond the basic 3D model. 4D BIM typically connects the model with construction scheduling, while 5D BIM adds cost information. The terms 6D and 7D are used less consistently across the industry but often relate to areas such as sustainability, asset information, operations, and facilities management.
For plumbing teams, these uses can connect the model with sequencing, quantities, estimating, asset information, and long-term building operations.

There is no single LOD used for every plumbing BIM project. The required LOD depends on what the project needs from the model. LOD 300 can represent developed design geometry, while LOD 350 adds information and interfaces needed for more detailed construction coordination. LOD 400 may be required when elements need to support fabrication or installation. The project's BIM requirements should define the expected LOD before modeling starts.
